In a step to integrate rural areas with mainstream world, the government of Nagaland, a state in north-eastern India, will distribute community TV sets to villages. The initiative would also provide communities exposure to global and national developments.

Kohima: The government of Nagaland has decided to distribute community television (TV) sets to all recognised villages in the state to improve communication process and to better link them with the world by providing access to global developments.

Announcing this, the state Information and Public Relations and Economics and Statistics Parliamentary Secretary R Tohanba said that the initiative will be jointly implemented by the Chairman of the respective District Planning and Development Boards of the districts, the Deputy Commissioners and the District Public Relations Officers.

Acknowledging the efforts put into the realisation of this project, he said this could be an initiative in exposing the midland to the northeast. The discrimination and differentiation felt by the people can be sorted out through such exposures, he added.

Deliberating on the various activities of the department since its inception right after statehood, Tohanba expressed optimism that the department would continue to play a key role in disseminating policy initiatives of the state government for accelerating development in the state.

He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India for providing the TV sets and also the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for taking the interest to bring about the programme in the state.

Lauding the project as well-timed, the state Chief Secretary expressed hope that through this noble programme, the community and rural people of the state would be benefited.

Expressing concern for availability of power, Lalhuma stressed on the need for collaboration between the department and NePED in order to provide free and reliable power supply and to make good use of this venture.
