India is the second most populous nation in the world and its dimensions are sub-continental. For as long as one can remember it has been a plural society. To the superficial observer it presents a bewildering mosaic of ethnic, and religious diversity. However it would be a grave mistake to conclude that this variety is divisive. A strong thread of unity-a sense of Indianness underlies the colourful kaleidoscope. Perhaps, it is pointless to talk in this context of minorities and a majority
