The TK Nair Committee set up by the prime minister has written to chambers of industry on the issue of affirmative action

Tuesday, November 7, 2006 (New Delhi): The TK Nair Committee set up by the prime minister has written to chambers of industry on the issue of affirmative action.

The committee has asked industry why the government should not be allowed to impose the penalty provision in case industry defaults on implementing affirmative action for SCs and STs in their companies.

According to the letter:

    * Affirmative action in industry can't be entirely voluntary.
    * Companies should set strict targets for affirmative action.
    * The government should monitor affirmative action in industry.

Industry opposed

The proposal to industry also says that companies must report on the action taken in their annual reports.

A code of action has already been prepared by CII and Assocham which lays down guidelines on the steps industry should take to upgrade skills of SC-STs and make them more employable.

The industry is opposed to bringing a penalty provision and wants it to be voluntary.
