Education is the backbone of national development and is widely accepted as an instrument of social change. India has been an active partner in the worldwide movement for education for All that began in 1990 in Jomtien followed by Millennium development goals. The important issues which need immediate attention to achieve MDG targets in Education are as follow.

Progress of education is impeded in Afghanistan as Taliban insurgents are reported to be regularly threatening families to dissuade them from sending their kids to schools. Hundreds of thousands of young children are deprived of education, especially girls, owing to rampant attacks on educational institutions.

Unless we place it on the country’s political agenda and make it a vibrant people’s movement, right to education in India would not see the light of the day. Such thoughts marked the mood at an international consultation organised by Plan India and UNESCO held in the national capital today.

Founder of IT for Change Gurumurthy Kasinathan agrees that ICTs can help achieve some critical priorities in India’s education sector. Yet he notes the formation of a group to draft a national policy on ICT in school education has more members from IT majors – Intel and Microsoft – than educationists.

OneWorld South Asia has launched a phone-based knowledge delivery service to provide critical academic support for teachers and students in Rajasthan, a western Indian state. The service has been started in Udaipur as a pilot project, which will be extended to other districts of the state at a later stage.
