What is OneWorld?
"OneWorld is dedicated to promoting human rights and
sustainable development by harnessing the democratic potential of the
Internet"
OneWorld is the leading supersite in the world dedicated to issues
of global justice and sustainable development. More than 1250
organisations from around the world come together under one roof to
broadcast an alternative global agenda.
Our partners include:
- CSO organisations working in the South like Katha
a small NGO working in the areas of literacy, empowerment and
income-generation with women. It runs progressive schools in Delhi's
slum clusters in Govindpuri
- International NGOs like Oxfam working to put an
end to poverty world-wide. In partnership with local groups, Oxfam
works with poor people to help them help themselves.
- Campaigning and Alternative Media organisation
like Jubilee Plus, the official successor to Jubilee 2000 and is
committed to campaigning for more accountable lending and debt
negotiation and opening up financial institutions to scrutiny by civil
society.
- UN agencies and major institutions like the
United Nations Development Programme. The UNDP is the development arm
of the United Nations. Ninety p.c. of its country programming supports
the world's poorest people.
More than just a list of organisations, OneWorld is a meeting place
where leading international organisations like these can reach a
monthly audience of hundreds of thousands of people- an audience made
up of journalists, broadcasters, policy makers and academics and
students in more than 120 countries.
Who can be a partner in the OneWorld Community?
OneWorld assesses applications on a case by case basis using the following guideline criteria.
- Organisations working in the fields of sustainable development or
human rights. This may include publicising, campaigning, researching,
or implementing work in these areas.
- Branches, departments or projects which work in the fields
of sustainable development or human rights as part of larger
organisations with wider aims. However, where the wider
organisation is seen to significantly contravene the aims of the
OneWorld community, the application will be refused.
- OneWorld is currently giving special priority to partnership applications from NGOs based in the South.
In considering applications for partnership, staff at OneWorld are
basing their definitions of 'human rights' and 'sustainable
development' on three key documents (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Rio Declaration, and the Child Rights Convention ) which offer guidance on these terms. However, these documents are not considered to be unquestioned authorities.
Who cannot be a partner in the OneWorld community?
- Organisations whose activities significantly contravene OneWorld's
objectives of promoting human rights and sustainable development will
be excluded from the partnership.
- OneWorld is supportive of change by peaceful means,
therefore organisations directly or indirectly involved in the use of
violence do not have a place in the community.
- OneWorld embraces all human differences and cannot accept
organisations advocating intolerance on the grounds of ethnicity,
gender, disability, sexual orientation, or religion.
- OneWorld cannot accept political parties
- Commercial organisations are not specifically excluded, but
will be required to demonstrate how their activities will benefit the
shared aims of OneWorld
- OneWorld also reserves the right to refuse applications on
the basis of editorial judgements, including the quality, updatedness,
relevance or presentation of information on a prospective partners'
site. Specific reasons will be communicated if this is means your
application is turned down.
What does Partnership with OneWorld mean?
Partnership with OneWorld means membership of a community of
organisations working from a range of perspectives and backgrounds to

partnership to reflect no single orthodoxy, but to nurture debate and
to value difference by promoting inclusive and participatory global
communication.
Why do I have to pay the partnership fee? What do I get?
The cost of managing and maintaining the OneWorld portal is partially
supported by a variety of donor agencies and efforts are made to keep
partnership fees as minimal as possible. However to be sustainable

Annual Partnership Subscription fees
Annual partnership subscription fees are not charged at a flat rate. We
feel it fairer for subscriptions to take into account the size of the
applicant organization and therefore we have adopted the system used by
BOND (British Overseas NGOs for Development).
Partnership is divided into five bands (A-E) according to annual
turnover. To ascertain your current band, simply find your most recent
figure for annual turnover and check which category it falls into.
