Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known popularly as Prachanda has been overwhelmingly elected as Nepal’s new prime minister, ending political deadlock of last several months. He defeated the Congress Party candidate Sher Bahadur Deuba by a huge margin, securing 80% of total votes cast.

Spending his last night in Narayanhiti Palace, home to the royal family for more than a century, Nepal’s former king Gyanendra is all set to move out. The palace will be turned into a museum that will house the relics of the Shah dynasty.

People in Nepal are jubilant, celebrating the end of the monarchy. The unpopular king has now been asked to vacate the palace within a fortnight. With the emergence of an inclusive democratic republic, they now hope that the doors to social and economic transformation will now be opened.

Nepal Maoists owe their impressive performance to marginalised communities in the recently held elections for Constituent Assembly. It is now up to the former rebels to prove themselves and see how they can come up to the expectations of these people whose interests nobody in the past bothered to address.

Nepals historic poll began early this morning. About 17.6 million eligible voters will have a choice to elect a Constituent Assembly that will decide the fate of the 240-year old Shah dynasty in the country.

Cadres of Maoists and other political parties in Nepal continued to clash with each other until the last day of campaigning. Over 200 poll-related incidents of violence in the last one month have been recorded. It is now to be seen how peacefully the elections take place on April 10.

Nepal has sealed its border with India ahead of polling for security reasons. At least 20 people are reported to have died in election-related violence, including yesterday’s killing of a candidate from a prominent party. Final preparations are on with poll officials reaching 21,000 polling stations dotting the country.
