The National Assembly of Pakistan has unanimously passed a bill to provide for a higher punishment for sexual harassment. In a rare show of concern for women without a dissent, the lawmakers have expanded the definition of the crime to facilitate prosecution.

A countrywide survey has revealed that Pakistanis view the US, India and Talibans as main threats to their country. People also have a lot of resentment against their leaders and the ruling political party but are generally supportive of the military campaign against the extremists.

Oxfam International’s focus group findings show that displaced women fear returning to Upper Swat district in Pakistan. The aid agency has urged the government to ensure voluntary, dignified and safe return of the displaced people and emphasised on the need to establish sustainable security in their home villages.

Nazim has been a system of local governance in Pakistan, which is now being allowed to fade away. By offering voters access to levers of power that they otherwise did not have when their political rulers were far away, it helped people solve their petty problems and other development issues.

Pakistani government has not yet set any official date for the return of internally displaced persons to their homes in the conflict-ridden North West Frontier Province of the country. About 261,000 refugees are living in 27 camps and a significant number outside of them.

Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction of Taliban militants has scrapped the 2007 peace deal signed with the Pakistani army, citing the continued US and Pakistani military offensive. This has raised fears of prolonged bloody battle as no one has ever defeated a combined insurgency in the Waziristan area.
