India: Government to set up 150 smart schools nationwide

The Indian government has proposed to establish 150 smart schools across the country the revised Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in School scheme. Proposals for 55 smart schools in 11 states and two union territories have been cleared so far.

The Government has proposed to set up 150 smart schools across the country under the revised centrally-sponsored scheme ''Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in School''.

"Each school will be set up at a cost of Rs 25 lakh," said Minister of State for Human Resource Development, D Purandeswari.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, she said proposals for 55 smart schools in 11 states and two union territories have been cleared so far.

Five smart schools each have been recommended to be set up in states like Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, she said.

Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim will have four such schools each, while Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu will have two each, she said.

To an another question, she said, state madrassa boards have been granted equivalence to equate their secondary and senior secondary qualification with CBSE and other boards by the corresponding state education boards.

It will give a big boost for those studying in the madrassas to seek employment and entry to higher levels of education
