Although perhaps best known for football and the glamor of carnival, the unequal and violent reality of life in Brazil has many negative consequences for development and human rights in general, and specifically for the country's ability to meet the Millennium Development Goals. Brazil has taken a pioneering approach to HIV/AIDS control and supported the use of free and open source software, but there are contradictions in its role in the climate crisis -- it is the world's largest producer and consumer of biofuels at the same time as it fails to prevent the ongoing deforestation of its Amazon region.
