15.05.2008 The clearing of mangroves along Myanmar’s coast exposed communities to greater risks during cyclone Nargis, says the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Intact and dense coastal vegetation can reduce impacts of stormy waves and act as windbreaks in reducing devastation.

28.04.2008 Helena Norberg Hodge first visited Ladakh in northern India in 1973 to study its culture and language. While deforestation leads to a range of problems such as desertification, climate change etc., biodiversity has a bearing on the availability of all natural resources and their implications for livelihoods, living conditions and values.
The sustained access of populations to improved water sources and an adequate supply of safe water and to improved sanitation in terms of hygienic facilities to dispose of human waste are directly addressed by the MDGs, and are also associated with problems of human settlement.
Pollution and non-biodegradable waste, while not explicitly addressed by the MDG framework, contribute greatly to environmental degradation and thus are important concerns towards ensuring environmental sustainability.
The limited availability of conventional energy resources and the looming threat of an energy crisis have made it important to conserve non-renewable energy resources and at the same time seek alternative, non conventional sources for energy generation.
The series of natural disasters that have best the South Asia region and their enormous and far-reaching consequences have rendered it imperative to work towards prevention and also for minimising the impact through engaging in disaster prevention, preparedness, and management and mitigation efforts.
The environment is a cross-cutting concern across various sectors, and interest groups, and the goal of ensuring environmental sustainability can be best pursued through the concerted efforts of the different stakeholders.
The growing relevant of information and communication technologies towards promoting sustainable development and ensuring environmental sustainability is evident through the range of initiatives by various agencies in the field.
Institutional structures and policy and implementation mechanisms provide a framework for governance towards ensuring environmental sustainability.

India Social Forum
INDIA SOCIAL FORUM
OneWorld South Asia has launched a special section on the India Social Forum that takes place on November 9-13. The section will try to capture the diversity and the vibrance of the movement that began in Brazil in 2001 and which has come to India twice.

We also invite participants to email rahul.kumar@oneworld.net events, news and information related to the ISF.
TerraGreen - a fortnightly ezine from The Energy and Resources Institute - is our latest environment partner. The magazine focusses on energy, environment and sustainable development issues.
World Environment Foundation in association with World Council for Corporate Governance is organising an international convention on climate change from May 30-June 1, 2008 at Palampur, India. The event will be a unique platform for business leaders, policy makers, NGOs and environmental experts to share ideas on developing clean technology.
Freelance journalist and social activist Swagat Thorat in western India publishes a fortnightly called Sparshgyaan in local language for the visually impaired. In view of the limited availability of literature in Braille, this can be described as commendable effort.
Low levels of literacy make it difficult for families in Pakistan to access information on post-natal care, contraception and medical attention. With only two percent of its GDP allocated to education, the country risks achieving the Millennium Development Goals, says UNESCO.
In Nepal, many women and children live with HIV/AIDS passed on to them by their husbands and fathers. UNICEF is helping them by taking care of their treatment and arranging for education of their children.
Recent military operations by US and NATO forces have displaced thousands of families in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan, forcing them to live without shelter, food and medical assistance. UN agencies and other international aid groups have been asked to provide humanitarian relief to the unfortunate victims.
