OneWorld to inaugurate Ek Duniya Audio Studio

Background

Radio remains the most powerful mass medium for reaching large numbers. It is an important tool for the rapid dissemination of important messages on various issues and provides a platform for expression of views, concerns and perceptions. It is a tool that can be used to develop community cohesion and solidarity. Community involvement is fundamental for the successful use of radio with diversified thinking process on various issues, like health, education, nutrition, socio-cultural taboos and many others.

To promote use of radio as an effective tool of communication for development and to use radio as a participatory method to empower communities, OneWorld South Asia has initiated Ek Duniya Ek aawaaz radio programme. The objective is to build the capacity among Community Based Organisations in the use of audio tools as a means for social and economic empowerment and to build /strengthen grassroots broadcasters’ network to amplifying voices from the community.

Dr. Basheerhamad Shadrach feels that the Community Radio policy which is in the final stage of being tabled in the parliament for approval will empower the communities. The capacity so developed among the Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) could be used to develop and air community radio programmes as and when community radio becomes a reality in the country.

NGOs from the states of Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir are participating in the programme. NGO networking will help in connecting communities and empowering people while working on various issues related to realisation of Millennium Development Goals.

An audio studio facility has been set up to facilitate and support the above objectives. Mr. K.S. Sarma, CEO, Prashar Bharti Corporation is the chief Guest and Dr. K. K. Paul, chief of Police, Delhi Police is the guest of honour for the evening.

Key speakers include Dr. B. Shadrach, Director, OneWorld South Asia, Ms. Indira Mansingh, Development Alternatives and Mr. P.Jayarajan, Trustee, OneWorld South Asia.

Mr. Pradip Baijjal, President TRAI, Mr. Kiran Karnik, NASSCOM, Mr. Ashok Khosla, President, Development Alternatives, and Prof. M. Tawfik, UNESCO will also participate in the event.
