OneWorld South Asia, in association with ITCAN and other associates, has announced the launch of an e-discussion on "Pro-poor HIV/AIDS Strategies". The e-discussion can be accessed here.
The e-discussion on "Pro-poor HIV/AIDS Strategies" among administrators and professionals from NGOs, Government, Pharmaceutical companies, Faith based institutions & orgnisations, HIV/AIDS affected individuals & families, Educational institutions (e.g. Christian Medical College, Vellore - where in 1986 the first HIV/AIDS case was confirmed in India), Health professionals and others is expected to identify practical problems and their solutions at different strata of the society. The e-discussion would generate exciting and valuable insights for practitioners to tackle multifaceted aspects of HIV/AIDS.
Issues like affordability to treatment and accuracy of data on the infected and treated daunts the humanity. Compounding the problem is the non-availability of any curative drug for HIV/AIDS as of now and the prospect of its being non-affordable in the context of WTO mandated Patent and Intellectual Property Rights.
Some of the issues that can possibly be 'e-discussed' and addressed are:
- Economic impact of HIV on households and the role of micro-finance.
- Evolution of response to HIV from an essentially Bio-Medical Model to a multisectoral one.
- Feminization of HIV/AIDS
- Stigma and Discrimination among the marginalized, especially those facing double discrimination - those practicing alternate sexual behaviour, sex workers, those involved in substance abuse
- Extent to which responses to HIV are reaching the really marginalized (Dalits and others such in Indian context)
- Role of institutional care and support, especially for widows and orphans vis-à-vis community based care and support.
- Role of Faith Based Organization - especially Islamic and Hindu and others including Christian organisations
- Role of technology - drug discovery and communication.
- Areas of concern - Prevention, testing, treatment, stigma & discrimination (social & job), information (Quality and accuracy), food (eg. micronutrients) for strengthening body immune system and opportunistic diseases.
- Effective ICT interventions for prevention and post infective stages for different focussed target groups
The e-discussion on "Pro-poor HIV/AIDS Strategy" is being moderated by a panel comprising of Ms Chi Laigo Vallido from Philippines NGO Council for Population issues (PNGOC) based in Manila; Dr Shantanu Dutta from Emmanuel Hospital Association, based in India; and Dr R Sweety Premkumar, an expert on healthcare issues and currently advising OneWorld South Asia on health knowledge management issues.
