Protests have already begun in Scotland two days ahead of the G8 summit. Police arrested 90 people in Edinburgh during a rally, after anarchists and anti-globalists started throwing stones, bottles and pieces of furniture. Meanwhile, hundreds of activists blocked the gates of the Faslane naval base on Scotland's western coast, where another four people were arrested.

The three-day summit of the seven wealthiest countries and Russia is surrounded by a tight security operation. Nearly 11,000 police officers are already stationed near the hotel in Gleneagles where the G8 leaders will be meeting.

Climate change caused by the greenhouse effect is high on the summit's agenda. United States President George W Bush says he will not support any Kyoto-type plan to combat global warming during the coming G8 summit. President Bush says he believes the best way to fight global warming is to develop new technologies. He says the Kyoto treaty would have destroyed the US economy. British Prime Minister Tony Blair had been hoping for an agreement on reducing carbon dioxide emissions during this week's summit.
