India to transform villages through land reforms

The Indian government has taken up a massive reforms programme for its rural areas that still lag behind in development indicators like education, health and other basic amenities. The government plans to provide water, lay roads and ensure power to all villages in the next five years.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told villagers in a south Indian village that the government is spending more and more on social welfare schemes. He urged the people to help the government fight corruption and stressed that land reforms would help empower the landless and the Dalits.
