Mobile completes a decade in India

Mobile telephony has completed ten eventful years in India, during which mobile connections overtook landline connections. These ten years have seen prices tumble down, addition of new features and increasing competition between cell phone makers as well as telephony providers.

In urban centres, the phone has found utility even with the most modest socio-economic groups with hawkers making use of the mobile to sell their wares and auto-drivers using it to keep in touch with their passengers.

Technology has evolved and SMS has been a big hit with users while MMS has gained notoriety because of a flood of scandalous images involving everyone from school children to film stars.
