WTO farming subsidy talks run aground

Talks within the World Trade Organisation on farming subsidies have run aground. According to the United States and European Union, the matter puts the success of the whole world trade meeting at risk.

Last week, the United States offered to cut farming subsidies considerably. The European Union was due to do the same but met with opposition from the French.

Paris has warned EU negotiator Peter Mandelson to tred carefully. The French government fears Mr Mandelson will grant too many concessions in negotiations with the US and other countries. Of all EU countries, France profits the most from farming subsidies.
