Local honey production doing well

THIMPHU: There has been a substantial increase in honey production in Bumthang this year. The Beekeeper’s Association said that there had been an increase of almost 6000 kilograms compared to previous year. The association this time saw a total production of more than 12,000 kilograms of honey.

The chairman of the association told BBS that the production of honey largely depended on the weather conditions. One of the problems faced by the beekeepers was religious sentiments of the people, said the chairman.

The nectar is collected from mid May to June and is usually harvested in July.
The honey from clover, mixed flower and pure buckwheat are the three types of honey that the association produces. The association also started honey production using European species of honeybees since in 1987.

The association says that most of the production is sold within the country.
The beekeeping project was established in 1995 with support from Helvetas. It was later handed over to the beekeepers association of Bhutan. Currently it has twenty one members
