Reservation cannot tackle joblessness: Ratan Tata

Even as the demand for reservations in private sector is being hotly debated, Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons Ltd, and Mr Rahul Bajaj, CMD, Bajaj Auto Ltd, opposed such a proposal stating that it would further divide the society.

Instead, they favoured bringing about a systemic change in the education set-up, strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises, and advocated a system that provides equal opportunities to all the underprivileged, not necessarily based on caste.

Speaking on the sidelines of the graduation ceremony at the Indian School of Business here on Saturday, Mr Ratan Tata said, "The current problem of joblessness cannot be tackled through reservations. We need to look at changing the education system that would make people competitive and address the issue from a different, competitive perspective."

"For instance, we need to encourage small and medium enterprises, which can market their products to larger enterprises, this will kick up a chain reaction in terms of providing jobs," Mr Tata said.
