The Government will give four national awards to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individual human rights activists for outstanding fieldwork in eradicating untouchability and in combating offences of atrocities, Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar told the Lok Sabha.

The awards, two in each category, comprise Rs. two lakhs each for the individual activist and Rs. five lakhs to an institution, Ms. Kumar said in a suo motu statement.

The awards, to be given to outstanding NGOs or individual activists in each of the four regions, may be shared by more than one recipient or organisation. It would be instituted in 2007.
