The Annual state of education report 2006-realased by planning commission chairperson, Montek Singh Ahluwalia-says little has improved in public school. The report also says children whose mothers are not educated are more likely to drop out from school and their learning ability is less. The report surveyed 3.18 lakh households across 90 percent districts in the economy.
About 55 percent of class V students in rural India cannot divide three digits by one digit. About 47 percent of them cannot read their class 2 textbooks fluently The report shows that there has been a small improvement- four to five percent in 2006 in the learning abilities of class 1 and 2 students as compared to 2005. About 73 percent children in these classes can recognize alphabets and 59.3 percent can recognize number up to 100. About 60 percent students solved math problems. The survey also suggests that unschooled mothers had a gender bias-only 8.4 percent of their sons were out of school as compared to 11.4 percent daughters. Madhav chavan of Pratham called for a new approach to integrate adult literacy with school education. Source: Pratham Report |
