A health handbook for women with disabilities

Your rating: None

Written in collaboration with women with disabilities in over 40 developing and developed countries, this handbook aims to help women and girls with disabilities to care for themselves; improve their general health, capabilities and self-reliance; and participate more effectively in their communities.

Subjects include: mental health, family planning, pregnancy and childbirth, self-defence, organising for disability-friendly health care and support for care givers. Chapter Five, "Caring for Your Body", provides advice on how to eat well, how to avoid anaemia, and gives examples of different ways to exercise. There is also guidance on how to deal with pressure sores and monthly periods. Chapter Seven on "Sexuality" discusses sexual feelings, what makes a good relationship and different ways to be physically intimate.

Information is presented in an accessible language, with illustrations. There is a section on medicines, an appendix which explains difficult words, and advice throughout on how to challenge discriminatory attitudes. This handbook is useful to girls and women with disabilities, health workers, family members and caregivers.
