Campaign spreads awareness on domestic violence law

Over two hundred people came together at the capital Lucknow on November 25th for a poetry reading on feminist voices and a powerful performance called ‘Aurat’ at Rai Umanat Bali Hall. Through these artistic mediums of words, imagery, music and drama, the event highlighted the important social and emotional implications of violence on women’s lives.

The programme was one of the many cultural expressions that are taking place in the city as part of the campaign Ab to Jaago, which has been launched in 41 districts of Uttar Pradesh to spread the message on the Domestic Violence Act 2005 and invite dialogue.

The campaign, as part of the 16 Days of Activism on Gender Violence, will run from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, the International Human Rights Day. It aims to create awareness about the DV Act 2005 in the districts and build community support for the proper implementation of the Act.

On November 28th, youth volunteers participated in a road show carrying banners and posters in front of a prominent retail mall to grab the attention of shoppers. They handed out leaflets on the DV Act 2005 and initiated conversations on the issue with passersby.

Campaign partners in various districts of UP sensitized their community members through promotional material, open discussions, signature campaign, candle march and other cultural activities. Some of these include Hamirpur, Chandoli, Jhansi, Banda, Ghazipur, Gorakhpur, Balia, Allahabad, Basti, Varanasi, Lalitpur and Pratapgarh.
