Consultation on Bhutanese refugees

South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) is organising a consultation on the Concerns of the Bhutanese Refugees in South Asia on the March 31, 2008, at the ICSSR, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, JNU Institutional Area, Conference Hall, New Delhi, India from 9.30 am - 5.00 pm.

The objective of the consultation is to provide a forum to deliberate on the present state of the Bhutanese refugees in India and Nepal and the recently held elections to the National Assembly, among others.

The opening session will be chaired by former Indian Prime Minister I.K. Gujral, who is also the chairperson of SAHR.

Ms Syeda Hameed, Member, Planning Commission of India and Founder Member of SAHR will present SAHR’s journey. Ms Kamla Bhasin will present the purpose of consultation.

In the session: “Concerns of the Bhutanese refugees in South Asia,” Dr Devendra Raj Yadav will introduce the theme and also reflect on the experience and role of the civil society in present circumstances.

Prof. M.P. Lama, Vice Chancellor Sikkim University, Kuldip Nayar, eminent journalist, D.P. Kaphley, PFHRB, Nepal, Ms. Pamela Philipose, Director, Womens’ Feature Service, Ms Yamini Jaiswal, Coordinator, SAHR India Chapter and representatives from the Indo-Bhutanese Friendship Society and Bhutan Solidarity Group will also speak.

Anand Swaroop Verma of Bhutan Solidarity Group will talk on India’s attitude towards the Bhutanese Refugees.
