Conference on climate change and food security
Institute of Development Studies is organising an international conference on Climate change, Livelihoods and Food Security from April 24-26, 2009 in Jaipur, a western Indian city. Abstracts of papers exploring various issues related to the theme should be submitted by January 31.
Climate change is expected to compound existing food insecurity and vulnerability patterns. Small-scale rain-fed farming systems, pastoralist systems, inland and coastal fishing and aquaculture communities and forest-based systems are particularly vulnerable to climate change.
It is therefore imperative to identify and institutionalise mechanisms that enable the most vulnerable to cope with climate change impacts.
To encourage collaborative thinking on how to respond to these challenges, Jaipur based Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with Association of Asian Scholars, Bangkok is organising an International conference on Climate change, Livelihoods and Food Security from April 24 - 26, 2009 in the western Indian city.
Food security is adversely affected due to climate change impact on agriculture, forestry, fisheries, shift in production patterns, degradation of arable lands, increased vulnerability of landless/poor, new patterns of pests and diseases, higher costs to farmers and consumers and so on.
In the food security context the following issues are important:
- Rural vs. urban
- Seasonal vs. year round
- Crop vs. livestock
- Rainfed vs. irrigated
- Commercial vs. subsistence
- Individual vs. community
- Men vs. women
- Infants vs. adults
- Formal vs. informal sector
Papers on the following themes exploring the nexus between climate change and livelihood and food security are invited:
- Debate on climate change and developed and developing countries
- Impact on resource poor people/ communities
Changes in Livelihood strategies of poor/ affected - Carbon trading
- Agricultural production and climate change
