Reforming governance institutions and processes is key to ensuring social inclusion of hitherto excluded citizens of our society.

Despite West Bengal’s enormous progress over the past several decades, large sections of scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward classes and Muslim households continue to be excluded from the benefits of various development programmes, services and livelihood schemes.

To examine some of these pressing issues, Delhi based Society for Participatory Research in Action (PRIA) is organising a conference on Citizenship and Governance: Challenges for Social Inclusion from February 19-20, 2009 at North Bengal University campus, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India.

This conference would be a platform to share empirical insights, best practices and emerging strategies to deepen and broaden social inclusion in West Bengal, and beyond.

The conference will particularly focus on inclusion of scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward class and Muslim households; special attention would be placed on gender and age discriminations within these communities as well.

Conference delegates would include researchers, teachers, students, government officials, elected representatives, social activists, civil society actors and journalists from West Bengal, and other parts of the country as well. Some international delegates will also be invited to share their research.

Preference will be given to those presenters who combine the world of practice and research, utilise Community-based Participatory Research, and have focus on action-oriented studies.
