Course on forced migration
Panos South Asia in association with Calcutta Research Group invites applications for the latter’s annual winter course on forced migration in December this year. Discussing various issues related to displacement, it will critically analyse the legal and policy framework. The deadline for sending applications is May 31, 2009.
The Mahanirban Calcutta Research Group popularly known as the Calcutta Research Group (CRG) is a public policy forum working on human rights, women's dignity, issues of forced displacement and migration, peace and conflict resolution, citizenship, borders and border-conflicts, and other themes relevant to democracy.
Developed over the last few years as a programme on human rights and peace education, the course on Forced Migration has gained recognition in South Asia as one of the most well known educational programmes on issues of rights and justice relating to the victims of forced migration.
Supported by UNHCR, Government of Finland and the Brookings Institution it is aimed at scholars and educationists working on issues of rights and justice, functionaries of humanitarian organisations, national human rights institutions, peace studies scholars and activists, and minority groups, refugee communities, and women’s rights activists.
The course includes a 15-day orientation programme on Forced Migration to be held from December 1-15, 2009 in Kolkata, India. It will be preceded by a two and a half month long programme of distance education.
Course structure
The curriculum will deal with themes of nationalism, ethnicity, partition, national and international regimes of protection, political issues relating to regional trends in migration in South Asia, internal displacement, the gendered nature of forced migration and protection framework, resource politics, environmental degradation etc.
Eligibility
Applicants must have:
- Three years experience in the work of protection of the victims of forced displacement, or hold post-graduate degree in Social Sciences or Liberal Arts, and proficiency in English.
- Besides giving all necessary particulars, an application must be accompanied by two appropriate recommendation letters and a 500-1000 word write-up on how the programme is relevant to the applicant's work and may benefit the applicant.
Selected candidates from South Asia will have to pay INR 7000/ US $ 150 each as registration fee (from outside South Asia US $ 700). CRG will bear accommodation and other course expenses for all participants.
