The Department of Sociology, University of Delhi, will hold an international ethnographic film festival – the first of its kind in India – from November 26-30, 2008 in the Indian capital.

Such an event will provide an opportunity for a debate on the parallels and departures between the methods of classical sociological and anthropological field research and that of visual ethnographies.

The event will provide an opportunity to assess and define the category of the ethnographic film and of standards required to make such films pedagogically productive.

The festival will feature a series of lectures and discussions by film practitioners and anthropologists from different parts of the globe. It will offer a meeting place for academics, filmmakers and audiences from different parts of South Asia and beyond.

The Department is also collaborating with the International Ethnographic Film Festival of Rio de Janerio, Brazil to bring a selection of Brazilian films dealing with the theme of the festival.

Theme

Performance: Ritual and the Street will be the theme of the festival. The festival will screen documentaries on various ethnographic locales and cultural settings in a format that combines screenings, discussions and seminars.

Entry submissions will be open to all productions that deal with the theme.

The last date for entries is July 30, 2008.
