Charkha Development Communication Network, an NGO working to connect issues of the rural communities particularly the poor and marginalised to policymakers through the media has announced the Sanjoy Ghose Media Fellowship 2008-09 for women journalists and freelance writers residing in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Charkha believes that perspectives of women particularly in an area of conflict could contribute towards building a more harmonious and integrated society.

The fellowship is open to only for women journalists and freelance writers residing in Jammu and Kashmir. There are three fellowships with a value of Rs 12,000/- each. Selected fellows will be expected to send in six articles based on extensive fieldwork with photographs on their chosen topics.

Charkha has simultaneously announced the Women Writers in Ladakh Award to encourage women writers in Ladakh, the first award exclusively for the region. The motivation behind this is to link up this remote and cut off region within J&K to the mainstream through communication and media links. Three writers will be selected for the award, which will carry a stipend of Rs 5,000/- each.

Through the Fellowship and Award, Charkha aims to generate writings on these positive aspects of a society and a region and highlight them through the national mainstream media. Charkha’s Trilingual Feature Service in Hindi, English and Urdu will place these writings in the mainline newspapers to reach a vast readership across the country.

The Fellowship and Award will be for a duration of six months and will be announced on Charkha’s founder’s day to be held in New Delhi on 7 December 2008 to mark the birthday of the founder of Charkha, social activist, Sanjoy Ghose.

Applications for the Fellowship and the Award are invited in Hindi, English and Urdu.
