Fellowship on sustainable development

Jal Bhagirathi Foundation announces fellowship programme on best practices for sustainable development from November 23 to December 19, 2009 in Jodhpur, India. Applications are invited.

Jal Bhagirathi Foundation is an NGO working in the Thar Desert. The Foundation’s main focus is achieving water security in the Marwar region of Rajasthan. Community mobilisation and empowerment has been at the heart of this process, resulting in the formation of community institutions in over 200 villages.

The Scholar Programme is a month long structured programme, for students and practitioners of development from around the world to extend knowledge and insights from a unique and traditional environment- the Thar Desert in India.

Curriculum, Workshops and Field visits are facilitated by expert practitioners and academics in the region. Through study of best practice, discussion and debate, participants will develop practical understanding of various development topics such as:

  • Integrated Water Resource Management;
  • Water Quality and Safe Drinking Water;
  • Pricing of Water;
  • Gender and Water;
  • Sustainable and Inclusive Development;
  • Social Capital and Enabling Environment;
  • Traditional Wisdom;
  • Panchayati Raj (Decentralised Governance);
  • Adaptation to Climate Change;
  • Participatory Approaches.

Admission:

  • Admission to the programme will be based on a simple application along with a statement of purpose, which would be evaluated with a matrix of criteria including geographic representation, disciplinary background, academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience and motivation.
  • Since the medium of the course would be in English, only those candidates with proficient in English need to apply.
  • The shortlisted candidates would be informed about the decision 8 weeks before the commencement of the programme to make necessary travel arrangements.
  • Jal Bhagirathi Foundation would also provide necessary letters and advice to the foreigners to obtain a visa. Furthermore, fellowships covering tuition fee and accommodation will be awarded to a selected number of candidates on merit basis.

Course Fee and Accommodation:

The course fee for the one month programme will be Rs 45,000 (1,000 USD). Accommodation charges are additional to the course fee and include breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The cost will range from Rs 15,000 (330 USD) to Rs 50,000 (1110 USD) depending on the facility availed. Fellowships, which cover full tuition fee and or accommodation, are available.
