Photo contest on women's rights
Celebrating 30th anniversary of CEDAW, UNIFEM invites photographs that depict gender equality and non-discrimination of women in action in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme is Women Can: Women’s Rights are Human Rights. Deadline for submitting entries is October 15, 2009.
CEDAW is the international bill of rights for women that legally obligate governments that have signed onto the Convention to promote and protect the rights of women in all spheres of their lives.
It empowers women and promotes women’s active participation, which are crucial to creating social change and fighting global poverty. 186 countries – more than ninety per cent of the members of the United Nations – have signed onto the Convention. This is a powerful expression of commitment to achieving gender equality.
Theme:
Women CAN: Women’s Rights are Human Rights. The winning photographs will also be featured on the websites of the UN agencies involved in organizing the contest.
Interpretations of this theme can include depictions of:
- Women participating in decision-making processes,
- Women participating in post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction initiatives,
- Women and girls enjoying the same opportunities for education as men and boys,
- Women enjoying the same employment opportunities and labour rights as men,
- Women having equal access to health care services;
Women and men participating equally in household duties' - Rural women, indigenous women, HIV positive women, migrant women, refugee women and other often excluded groups of women enjoying these rights.
Submission guidelines:
- Contestants may apply in two categories: amateur and professional,
- For each entry, please include: photographer’s name, age, sex, contact information, photograph category, title, year, place and country where it was taken,
- Please include a brief description of the photograph,
Photographs may either be submitted in print or digital format, - Print submissions must be individual prints in colour or black and white and submitted with the original negatives or slides, sized at min. 20cm x 25cm, max. 21cm x 29cm
- Digital submissions must be in TIFF, EPS or JPEG format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi and must be submitted on a CD-Rom, accompanied by A4 size prints (21cm x 29 cm)
