The construction and operation of buildings together trigger a number of environmental problems such as indiscriminate mining and quarrying, deforestation and electricity consumption, primarily from polluting non-renewable fuels.

There is an urgent need to design and construct buildings in a way which minimises their ecological footprint.

Development Alternatives is organising a training programme on Building for Future: Sustainable Homes (Green Building) from March 19-21, 2009 at TARA Nirman Kendra, M G Road, New Delhi.

Many Asian countries have begun to put in place strategies and mechanisms for a larger realisation of 'Green' buildings. Green or 'sustainable' buildings, as they are alternatively referred to, are characterised by reduced operational energy consumption and environmental impact and minimised life-cycle costs.

They make the best use of renewable sources, such as sun, wind, rainfall and bio-waste and have a high proportion of building materials that are designed for re-use and recycling.

Objectives

  • To provide an overview of design and construction facets of green buildings
  • To establish decision-making criteria for the design and construction of green buildings
  • To provide exposure to various alternative building materials and technologies which can be used to construct green buildings

Course contents

  • Overview of a green building - This section provides the background of the building sector in terms of resource consumption and its implications and therefore the need to bring about a change in design and construction of buildings.
  • Green buildings: case studies - This section presents case studies of green buildings in the context of residential and commercial buildings. Visit will be made to green buildings along with a guided tour of the project.
  • Green construction materials and technologies - This section will cover the construction aspects of green buildings from the point of view of alternative materials and construction methods.
  • Design workshop - This session will be conducted in a participatory workshop mode where a green building design approach will be demonstrated in a particular context - type of building, region and climate.
