Aug 15, 2019

Nirma Kumari undertook the responsibility of mobilising women in the self- help groups for managing ODF plust activities in her village in Nalanda.

Nalanda/New Delhi: Nalanda district of Bihar, home to the UNESCO Nalanda archaeological site was declared open defecation free (ODF) in August 2018. This remains a significant achievement for the district. But the issue of solid waste management remained a challenge to tackle. The Giriyak Bigah village of Giriyak gram panchayat, solid waste management was a huge challenge, particularly as water bodies were being polluted.

With more and more villages and districts being declared ODF (Open Defecation Free) the challenge facing them now is the ODF plus activities which comprise of solid and liquid resource management (SLRM), menstrual hygiene management, maintenance of school and Anganwadi toilets, among others.

Nirma Kumari initiated and led various activities as she had been working with the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G) for three years as a motivator. She undertook the responsibility of mobilising women in the self- help groups (SHGs) to commence SLRM (Solid and Liquid Resource Management) activities. She also took steps to reform and engage the Nigrani Committee which was already in place for morning and evening follow up, to take up additional roles in SLRM activities.

Besides engaging full support from SHG members Nirma Kumari has visited schools and held orientation cum training on SLRM to ensure that schools observe safe sanitation practices. the village now has compost pits dug for biodegradable waste and soak pits made for wastewater in Raitar gram panchayat.  Periodically, the Swachhagrahi organises awareness building sessions and visits homes to educate village communities about segregation of waste and safe disposal of the same.

Several IEC activities are carried out to sustain behaviour change.  The district administration is keen to provide capacity building; orientation of communities on SLRM, training of natural leaders and intends to market SLRM products developed by the village communities.
