Respond to Kosi floods

We appeal to our readers to donate generously for the relief and rehabilitation flood victims in Bihar.

The floodwater of river Kosi has inundated vast areas of Bihar in India, creating unprecedented havoc in the lives of millions of people and destroying property worth crores of rupees. It is one of the worst disasters to strike the country, washing away entire districts, villages and towns.

This is not the usual Bihar flooding. Usually the Kosi river overflows its banks and floods the villages nearby. The people in these villages are prepared for it.

This year, the Kosi has completely changed course – submerging thousands of villages that had never experienced such flooding.

We urge you to immediately respond to this calamitous condition. You can do this by generously donating to the Prime Minister’s and Chief Minister’s Relief Funds. There are also civil society organisations engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts, we also urge you to contribute through them in whatever way you can. Some of the names of organisations with contact details are given below:

 

Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, on September 3, issued an appeal to all citizens to donate generously to his Relief Fund to help the relief and rehabilitation measures for the flood affected people of Bihar.

The contributions can be made by cheque or draft in the name of “The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund”.

As per directions on the subject the nationalised banks are not to charge any commission on preparation of drafts favouring the PMNRF.

Contributions to the PMNRF have been notified for 100% deduction form taxable income under section 80(G) of the Income tax act.

Chief Minister's Relief Fund

Contributions received will be used to carry out relief operations and rehabilitation of those affected by the floods. Contributions made to Chief Minister Relief Fund shall qualify for 100% exemption from income-tax under section 80g(2)(iii)(hf) of the Income-Tax Act.

AID India and Pratham

AID INDIA has been on the field organising rescue and relief efforts in the affected districts, providing food and medical support in several camps.

The organisation is also working with Pratham teams in Bihar to scale up the relief efforts.

Milk, biscuits and food for children are the first priority. Also, medicines, children's clothes, saris for women, undergarments, lungis and blankets are required.

Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS)

BGVS will be working through seven organised camps in all the flood-affected districts for the next two months. The objective of these camps is to provide immediate relief by providing food, clothes and water; proper health and sanitation facilities; and, relief from trauma by involving the people in creative activities.

As a matter of policy, BGVS does not accept funds that invoke FCRA clearance and conditionalities. However, any kind of donation from within the country (India) accounts would be most welcome.

The NBA is soon leaving for Bihar with a team. Those who want to volunteer and are willing to work hard in a challenging situation are most welcome. NBA appeals for immediate relief needs for the following items:

Clothes for adults and children of all ages, bed-sheets, woollen clothes, umbrellas, raincoats, medicines, etc. Financial help can also be sent.
