India: Delhi creates data bank to prevent information loss
Around 6,000 desktops have been installed across all institutions of Municipal Corporation of Delhi connecting them online to lessen paper work and avoid data loss.
All 2,275 institutions of Municipal Corporation of Delhi were on Monday connected online to create a data bank that will allow easy access to information and reduce pilferage and paperwork for the civic agency.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna inaugurated the data bank that will be functional 24X7 at MCD headquarters.
6,000 desktops have been installed across to all MCD agencies to make the network fully functional.
"This facility will help both the employees of MCD and the masses. There will be less paper work as the system will manage and store all forms of data of the MCD with a scope of next ten years of expansion," an MCD official said.
"It will work as a data bank for all types of information and will connect all institutions online as we have 54 servers to run it and 35 megabits per second upload.
"We have used multi-protocol label switching which will help us by not only providing storing and forwarding data facility, but we can also also offer additional services to our users," he said.
To make this system foolproof, provision for alerts like fire alarm, rodent alarm and CCTV. "There is also a back up facility to meet any eventuality. We have a provision for a virus back-up too," the official said. The civic authority has trained its officials to be able use the system properly.
"The main reason for coming up with this data centre is there was frequent loss of data, especially related to taxes, as online services would crash due to the burden," he said. Three shifts have been created to make this data centre functional 24X7.
