Summit on climate change

South Asian Youth Summit on Climate Change will organise a four-day conference later this year on ‘Road to Copenhagen’ to mobilise and support young people of South Asia to achieve a healthier and sustainable future. Deadline for submitting applications is August 10, 2009.

Climate Change has emerged out to be one of the major problems of our generation and South Asia is the region in the world that will be severely hit by climate change in different sectors.

The region remains highly vulnerable to droughts and floods that not only devastate lives and livelihoods, but also undermine progress on economic growth and poverty alleviation. The region’s economy and predominantly rural livelihoods heavily depend on the timely arrival and performance of the monsoons.

Young people of South Asia have identified this absence of youth aspirations on climate change as a concern, and have decided to hold the first ever South Asian Youth summit on climate change from September 3-6, 2009 at Dhulikhel, Nepal.

The aim of the summit is to provide a platform for youth to define climate change from their viewpoint and to engage in dialogue on possible solutions through steadfast and resolute action, in order to fight climate change and to propagate the values and principles of sustainable development.

  • To form a regional platform for young people to initiate collective actions.
  • To declare youth voices and aspirations as a South Asian Youth Declaration on Climate Change.
  • To educate and empower young people to take actions against climate change.
  • To facilitate exchange of ideas and sharing of techniques and practices on climate change.
  • Youth Delegates from South Asian Region for the coming COP15 at Copenhagen.

  • Anyone, between 16-29 can apply as a participant. Applicants older than 29 are welcome to attend as observers.
  • The registration fee is INR 500 for Nepalese participants, USD 15 for South Asian Participants and USD 25 for international participants.
