Meet the Fellows

Mahesh Suresh Sarlashkar

Chief Copy Editor at Maharashtra Times, Mahesh Suresh Sarlashkar handles news on socio-economic aspects. With experience of over a decade in the field of journalism, he has previously worked with Loksatta, a leading newspapers in Marathi. A graduate in Microbiology, he has done his masters in Journalism and Communications from the Shivaji University, Kolhapur. As a journalist, he has travelled extensively in Maharashtra to cover developmental issues including food security and the Y. D. Phadake Advance Research Centre, Mumbai, has published his book Relationship Between Food Security & Food Inflation and Effect on Rural-Urban People in India. He wrote a fortnightly column on the impact of economic globalisation on India in which he covered topics like the developing retail market and the strength of the Indian market in a global scenario.
Ratna Bharali Talukdar
Freelance Development Journalist and Writer

A freelance development journalist and writer, she is based in Guwahati, Assam, in North-East India. She is a regular contributor to www.indiatogether.org, Eastern Panorama and the Women's Feature Service (WFS). She is a recipient of the Chameli Devi Jain award for being an outstanding woman media person, the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism and the UNFPA/Laadli Media Award. She has also won the Munin Borkotoki award for literature. Prior to her selection as a fellow of the Akshaya Patra-OneWorld Media Fellowships on Hunger – 2012, she has been awarded six media fellowships.
Nivedita Jha
Freelance Journalist

Freelance reporter for several Delhi-based Hindi magazines and newspapers including Outlook Hindi, Etwar, Sablog, Hamwatan, Jha has earlier worked as a senior reporter with Hindi dailies like Nai Duniya and Rashtriya Sahara. She also also bagged a Laadli Media Award for gender sensitivity 2010-2011 for best news report (print, Hindi) conferred by Laadli (A girl child campaign by Population First in collaboration with UNFPA). Jha has been awarded two fellowships, prior to her selection as a fellow of Akshaya Patra-OneWorld Media Fellowships on Hunger–2012.
Soma Basu
Reporter, The Statesman

Soma Basu is a reporter working with The Statesman, Kolkata. As a reporter, she covers a wide range of areas including environment, science, human rights and gender issues. She writes on art and literature as well. Basu, who in past has worked for the Deccan Chronicle, Hyderabad, has received two fellowships and CMS-Panos Young Environment Journalist Award, 2011.
Sarada Lahangir
Bureau Chief, ANI Bhubaneswar

Based in Bhubaneshwar, Sarada Lahangir currently heads the bureau of the ANI television news agency. She also contributes to the Women’s Feature Service, Grassroots, www.raviwar.com and other regional websites in a freelance capacity. She holds a PG Diploma in Journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi. Lahangir has bagged many awards including Panos South Asia Media Fellowship on tobacco in 2012 and also in 2011; the Laadli Award for Gender Reporting; best news report in the eastern region for her work in the TV category in 2011 for her work - widow village of Rayagada. She also got special commendation in the Chameli Devi Jain Award in 2011 and 2012. She was awarded the National foundation of India (NFI) media Fellowship in 2007-08 for working on the marginalisation process in the Kalahandi Bolangir and Koraput (KBK) region and the struggle of tribal women.
