Meet the Jury

MK Venu
Managing Editor, The Financial Express

As the Managing Editor of The Financial Express, MK Venu is in charge of editorial management and other administrative aspects of the newspaper. A regular edit page columnist for The Financial Express and The Indian Express, Venu writes mainly on India's policy response to its rapid economic globalisation and the country’s political economy issues.

Previously, Venu served as Opinion Editor with The Economic Times, a publication in which he had a long stint. In his over 28 years in journalism, he has also been associated with other prestigious national newspapers such as Hindustan Times and The Times of India. Venu has written a lot on India's dynamic role at the WTO as also its quest to become part of regional trade blocs such as ASEAN and East Asian Summit. He is also a regular participant in economic policy related discussions on national television channels.
Gurdeep Singh Sappal
CEO, Rajya Sabha Television

Gurdeep Singh Sappal is Chief Executive Officer of the Rajya Sabha Television and was till recently the Officer on Special Duty to Vice President of India Hamid Ansari. His professional experience in television and quantitative research spans over 15 years during which he served as a media planner with Prasar Bharati, APS with the Minister of State for Personnel and Parliamentary Affairs, research fellow at National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, CSIR, and Associate Producer at TVI.

He has extensive experience in conducting research and consultancy on education, governance and development, and has worked with the Department of Education at the national and state levels; with IIT Delhi; CSIR; Care India; Aga Khan Foundation; Centre for Policy Research, District Primary Education Programme and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman
Director, UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan

Kiran Mehra-Kerpelman took on her Delhi assignment on February 1, 2011 as finds that there is so much happening in the country that she really wants to be part of it all. Mehra-Kerpelman has been a senior communication manager at the ILO, and chief of web, Information Production and Dissemination Section for the Department of Communication of the ILO.

Prior to these assignments, she was the managing editor and production manager of the ILO’s flagship magazine World of Work. She was also responsible for initiating and organising events, including the commemoration of special UN days. A national of the United States, Mehra-Kerpelman has returned to her country of origin after more than 30 years and says that she is privileged to be here and to be able to contribute to the UN’s work in this dynamic country.
Anuradha Narasimhan
Category Director Health and Wellness, Britannia

Anuradha Narasimhan leads the health and wellness category of Britannia Industries Limited, one of India’s leading food companies. An engineer by qualification from IIT Bombay and a marketer from IIM Bangalore, Narasimhan has had a successful career across various sectors in consumer marketing roles – Titan Industries, Hutchision Telecom and Hindustan Unilever Limited.

Notable amongst Narasimhan’s contributions at Britannia are the iron fortification of its Tiger brand of biscuits that targets the at-risk population of young children in a fun and delightful manner as well as driving advocacy and grassroots awareness. Narasimhan leads Britannia’s partnership work with GAIN, UNWFP, Clinton Global Initiative, World Bank Institute and with Indian organisations like Naandi and Navjyoti Foundation in its pursuit of the nutrition agenda.
Dr. Sheila C. Vir
Director, Public Health Nutrition and Development Centre

Dr Sheila C. Vir is Founder Director, Public Health Nutrition and Development Centre, New Delhi. Counted among India’s leading public health nutrition experts, Dr Vir has over 20 years experience of working with the UNICEF and Government of India, state governments, national institutes and international agencies on various nutrition and health programmes. Her expertise includes strategic planning, design and management of public health nutrition programmes in sectors such as health, women and child development, and education.

She has formulated national-level policies and action plans for addressing issues like malnutrition, and also developed and executed strategies for advocacy, communication and training of frontline workers in health and ICDS across India. Dr Vir has earlier served as secretary of the Nutrition Society of India. She was deployed in UNICEF’s Tajikistan office for developing their national nutrition strategy and community based nutrition programme. She is a Ph.D. from Queen’s University of Belfast, United Kingdom, and has published numerous articles on public health nutrition in national and international journals.
Bharathi Ghanashyam
Head – Communications, The Akshaya Patra Foundation

Bharathi Ghanashyam has been a development writer for over a decade and has documented development interventions on health, gender, environment, waste management and others. She has also worked to mainstream development communication through the media for an equal number of years. She has brought special focus through her writing to health issues such as TB, HIV, mental health and primary healthcare. She has reported from conferences such as ICAAP in Sri Lanka, and AIDS 2008 and AIDS 2010 in Mexico City and Vienna respectively. Her writings have been published in The Lancet, The Hindu Businessline, Deccan Herald and others.

She was invited to Stockholm in 2011 to speak at the International Conference on Childhood TB, organised by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. She has won The EU-India Media Awards 2006 for excellence in reporting on HIV/AIDS issues in India, and the Eli Lilly Stop TB Partnership Award for excellence in writing on TB - 2011. She is a Panos Fellow. Ghanashyam is the Founder and Editor of Journalists against TB, a blog comprised of health journalists committed to writing on the disease. She serves a full-time position as Director of Communications for The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which is the largest NGO-implemented mid-day meal programme in the world. It feeds 1.3 million school going children in government schools every school day of the year.
Rajiv Tikoo
Director and Editor–in–Chief, OneWorld South Asia

A Delhi-based journalist, Rajiv Tikoo has worked in senior editorial and management positions in reputed organisations like OneWorld, the United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC), the Indian Express Group, and the India Today Group. His current association as the representative head of the OneWorld network in South Asia began in November 2011. This is Tikoo’s second stint with OneWorld, where as programme manager & editor in 2004-05, he handled the Asia edition of the UNMC, and syndication of content to Yahoo!

In between these stints with OneWorld, Tikoo was deputy editor with the business and financial newspaper, The Financial Express, where he edited the Sunday edition and other features sections of the main newspaper. At The Financial Express, he also conceived and led the annual event, FE-EVI Green Business Survey & Leadership Awards, which focusses on business and sustainable development. He has written hundreds of articles and exclusive lead-page reports on issues ranging from social development, health, gender, education, displacement, environment, climate change, clean technology to corporate social responsibility.
