Intro- The civil society in Kolkata initiates a programme to advance legal training for animal welfare advocates.

Kolkata: Humane Society International India, in collaboration with Animal Welfare Board of India and Cape Foundation, Kolkata, starting from 20th June 2014, will offer a programme to improve animal welfare advocates’ legal training.

In the wake of increasing incidents of poorly managed animal abuse cases reported in India, this programme is second in the series of “Train-the Trainer” animal law programmes instituted last year by HSI India.

It aims to equip local animal welfare nongovernmental organizations and animal advocates with a thorough understanding of animal welfare law and the Indian criminal justice system.

Radhika Bose, founder of Cape Foundation, Kolkata said: “Local NGOs and animal welfare advocates in the city may be unaware of animal welfare laws and even the bare minimums to report or address any animal cruelty issue. I’m hopeful that this training programme will empower them enough to handle any animal cruelty issue independently.”

Arkaprava Bhar, manager of HSI India’s Protect Farm Animal campaign said: “This program will help build advocates’ capacity and knowledge, and help them improve coordination with law enforcement officials who handle animal cruelty cases.”

The programme is organized at Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Kolkata, as an intensive two-day course. Highly experienced and eminent animal welfare advocates will teach the curriculum with an aim to sensitize people about the welfare of animals.
