CR Sammelan: A reflection of India’s cultural diversity

Aug 28, 2019

Every CR station represents its very own slice of India’s culture, said TCA Kalyani, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

New Delhi: The Community Radio movement in India is not only well rooted at the grassroots level but has also earned the attention and respect of the local communities it strives to serve.

Prakash Javadekar, Minister, Information & Broadcasting, inaugurated the Seventh National Community Radio Sammelan on 28th August at Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. This year’s theme is “Community Radio for SDGs” (Sustainable Development Goals).

The Conference was organised with the purpose of bringing community radio stations across the country to one platform and celebrate their outstanding efforts in promoting cultural and social development in society.

The posters displayed the efforts made by the community radio in the local communities and helping the latter in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the local level.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare appreciated the community radio stations for their passionate involvement with the local community. “Community radio has brought in a big change particularly in the rural sector of the country. Local language, local content, local requirement can be very well understood by the local CR stations,” he said.

TCA Kalyani, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said that Community Radio was a reflection of India’s rich culture and a boost to its cultural diversity. “It is a delight to see a number of stations that have turned out and these are the operational community radio stations. There is a mini India over here as participants have come from every nook and corner of the country representing their own slice of India’s culture,” she said.

“We have also taken many efforts for the community radio stations to sustain themselves, and get the much needed sustenance in the form of advertising revenue,” she said.
