Encephalitis claims 72 lives in Bihar

To find the cause of the disease, a National Centre for Disease Control's (NCDC) team is camping in Muzaffarpur from last month.

Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, AES, has claimed 72 lives in last one and half month in Bihar. Muzaffarpur district is worst affected by AES and the death toll has reached 46 there.

According to the health department sources, a total of 216 AES cases have been registered of which 127 children were admitted for treatment in Muzaffarpur only.

To find the cause of the disease, a National Centre for Disease Control's (NCDC) team is camping in Muzaffarpur from last month. The representatives of AIIMS, Patna and UNICEF also visited Muzaffarpur this week and took blood samples of AES affected children for test.

Civil surgeon of Muzaffarpur hospital said that once results are available, the disease could be prevented with vaccinations. Due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome last year, more than 100 children lost their lives in the state.
