Maldives formalises the enactment of sustainable fishing practices

Aug 08, 2012

The Cabinet of Maldives has formalised its decision to impose the enactment of the sustainable Grouper Fisheries, and enforce the monitoring of the fishing practices involved in trade as part of its official sustainability plan.

The decision was reached today, following a round of discussion on a paper presented by the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture.

The Sustainability Plan aims to establish the fishing of Groupers as a natural, eco-friendly practice and guarantee its numerous long-term commercial and financial benefits to local fishermen, export agencies and the Maldivian economy.

In addition, the Plan outlines the regulations with regard to the minimum fixed limit of weight and size of Groupers allowed to fish and the geographical locations of local waters from where it is permissible to extract this fish.
