Malnourished children to get micronutrients

A first of its kind programme aimed at freeing children from the problem of malnutrition through the framework of the state’s anganwadi network has been launched by Gujarat. The micronutrient-mix food programme which got launched under Integrated Child Development Scheme targets pregnant women also.

Introducing micronutrient pre-mix for 44,000 anganwadis across the state, the Gujarat government aims to improve the health of malnourished children with a diet that comprises a pre-mix of soybean, cereals and pulses containing 18-20% protein and 600 gram kilocalories.

Gujarat has launched India’s first micronutrient-mix food programme aiming to reach around 40 lakh beneficiaries through the framework of the state’s anganwadi network.

The programme, described as a unique movement sure to free children from the problem of malnutrition, will also target pregnant women right at the doorstep.

The state’s Women and Child Welfare Department, on June 9, 2010, announced a battle against malnutrition. Under the Integrated Child Development Scheme, beneficiaries will be given ready-to-cook, pre-mix food, containing micronutrients, for over 70 traditional Indian items like sukhadi, shira, upma and balbhog.

The state government has made a provision of Rs 730 crore for the nutritional food programme and another Rs 150 crore for girls and pregnant women. State Women and Child Welfare Minister Anandiben Patel claimed Gujarat was the only state to take such an initiative. 

She added that facilities like toilets and playgrounds are also being provided for students at anganwadis across Gujarat. “The government has provided a Rs 100 crore special grant to improve the anganwadi infrastructure in the state."
