Treat human traffickers as murderers: Soli Sorabjee

Those involved in trafficking should be treated as murderers because they ruin the lives of young girls, he said.

New Delhi: India’s former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee said that that those involved in human traffickers should be treated as murderers because they are responsible for pushing girls into flesh trade.

Sorabjee was speaking at the first Multiple Action Research Group (MARG) – Dr Anand Prakash Memorial Lecture on the subject, ‘Victim of Human Trafficking and the Criminal Justice System’.

“I think traffickers should be treated as murderers. The way they ruin the lives of young girls for money. It is a vicious cycle where we are actually dealing with very nasty people,” Sorabjee said.

Sorabjee also lauded efforts of social activist Sunitha Krishnan. Sunitha is co-founder of Prajwala, a nonprofit that rescues and rehabilitates sex-trafficked victims.

Krishnan urged for the need of working towards changing the mindset of men with regards to their view about a body of a woman or a kid. “One of the remedies that I would suggest is to work with people by engaging men and boys to change their mindset about a woman’s body,” she said.

“If there is a three year old child sitting in a brothel, it certainly means that there is a man who wants to buy that tchild to have sex with her,” Krishnan lamented.

Krishnan has been working on the issue of sex trafficking and sex crime for over two decades now has rescued around 21,000 women and kids out of prostitution.
