World celebrates Environment Day-2014

Jun 05, 2014

Celebrated every year on the 5th of June, the World Environment Day is a call for taking positive environmental action to protect nature and planet Earth.

New Delhi: Today, on the 5th of June, countries all over the world are celebrating the World Environment Day.

The theme for World Environment Day (WED)-2014 is ‘Small Islands and Climate Change’ as small island nations are most vulnerable to climate-induced sea level rise and natural disasters.

The slogan for this year is ‘Raise Your Voice Not The Sea Level’ and it highlights the need to mainstream the discourse and action on the future of small-island-developing-states by being heard loudly and clearly.

In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion of World Environment Day by calling for greater government and people’s participation in making the planet greener and cleaner.

In a series of tweets, Modi said that World Environment Day is a day to bow to mother earth and to reaffirm our pledge to protect the environment, making our planet cleaner and greener. He further added, “We are blessed to be a part of a culture where living in complete harmony with the environment is central to our ethos”.

Initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 as a call for global awareness on taking action to protect the environment.

This day also marks the anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Human Environment in the year 1972 in Stockholm.
