Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff has agreed to help the Bihar government in its campaign to end female foeticide in the state.
Indian actor Jackie Shroff has decided to lend his voice to the ‘Bitiya Bachao Andolan’ (Save the girl child movement). The campaign against female foeticide was launched by the Bihar government in May last year. Recently, popular television show 'Satyamev Jayate' brought the issue to the fore front by talking about female foeticide and its grave consequences. .
Shroff promised to create awareness among people to fight the social menace. According to Health Minister Ashwini Choubey, the involvement of celebrities like Jackie Shroff would popularise the scheme and discourage the practice of female foeticide.
The 2011 Census shows 940 females per 1000 males, and many states have an even lesser number of females. Practices like female foeticide add to this imbalance in numbers. The practice is rampant in states like Bihar, and Shroff's involvement might just aid in spreading awareness about this issue.
