Global problems should have global solutions: John Gummer

Feb 05, 2014

DSDS- 2014 is all set to bring a remarkable and unique solution for sustainable development, says John Gummer, Former Member of Parliament, UK

Once again the sustainable development summit in Delhi makes a unique contribution to the world's environmental discourse. Too often it sounds as if the sustainability agenda is prepared by the very countries which have grown rich on unsustainable practices. In Delhi we correct that impression. It is here that we truly recognise that global problems can only have global solutions and that those solutions demand a much greater degree of social justice within and between our nations.

It is here in Delhi that we can find ways of ensuring not only that our planet survives but that it is able to feed, clothes, and house the nine billion people whom we will soon have produced. India has so much to contribute to debate and to action and Delhi provides a significant platform for both. Yet, it is the action that will count. Talking has taken up too much time and energy. This year we must all be looking to Delhi as the place where the demand for effective action generates real results.
