Manual on participatory photography

Jul 30, 2008

The PhotoVoice Manual is a new ground-breaking guide for the design and delivery of participatory photography projects with marginalised and vulnerable groups. It offers tips and suggestions for all aspects of project development including planning, implementation and promotion of work produced.

PhotoVoice’s new manual is a guide for the design and delivery of participatory photography projects with marginalised and vulnerable groups.

Since 1999, PhotoVoice has initiated various projetcs pioneering the use of photography with refugee groups, street children, orphans, the homeless, HIV/ AIDS sufferers and special need groups.

Written by PhotoVoice’s founders Anna Blackman and Tiffany Fairey, the manual is intended to give an introduction to the power of participatory photography as a tool for social change and targets photographers, development organisations, and educational institutions looking to include participatory photography in their work.

The authors' experience includes developing over 20 projects across four continents, including, for example, a project with HIV-positive women in the Congo and one with young parents in London.

The manual has been produced in response to queries on how to set up a participatory photography project and it offers suggestions for all aspects of project development, including planning, implementation, and promotion of work produced.
