Bangladesh to hold historic anti-poverty rally

As part of the global Stand Up events, Bangladesh will organise a countrywide rally mobilising millions against poverty. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Khaleda Zia along with several other leaders, will participate in the event.

A countrywide anti-poverty rally will be held on October 17, 2009 Saturday, as part of a united anti-poverty movement to establish Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty.

Millions of people representing all spheres of national life from each and every corner of the country including Dhaka by joining the rally and Stand-Up against poverty and MDGs will pronounce in unison their pledge through digital system simultaneously all over Bangladesh to eradicate poverty.

The national level main rally will be held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 3 p.m. Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, will be the chief guest on this historic anti-poverty rally.

Begum Khaleda Zia, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and former Prime Minister, will be the special guest on the occasion. Md. Abdul Hamid Advocate, Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament and Chairperson of the Anti-Poverty Campaign National Committee, will preside over the rally.

AMA Muhit, Finance Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Patron of APPG and Co-Chair of Anti-Poverty Campaign National Committee; Vice-Principal Md. Abdus Shahid MP, Chief Whip of Bangladesh Parliament, Chairperson-APPG and Co-Chair, Anti-Poverty Campaign National Committee; Zainul Abdin Farroque MP, First Vice-Chair of APPGs and Co-Chair, Anti-Poverty Campaign National Committee; Dr. Kazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, President of Bangladesh Economic Association and Member, Anti-Poverty Campaign National Committee; Salil Shetty, Global Director, United Nations Millennium Campaign(UNMC) and Shishir Shil, Secretary General of APPGs, Bangladesh Parliament and Member Secretary, Anti-Poverty Campaign National Committee, will also speak on this memorable occasion.

The presence of Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament on the same platform and their guidelines to establish the poverty-free Bangladesh will undoubtedly encourage the country’s people at this historic moment of a rock-solid national unity, which has been built on the basis of the campaign against poverty.

Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament will lead the pledge to the nation simultaneously from this historic platform in Dhaka, where millions of people across the country including PM Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Begum Khaleda Zia will take oath against poverty and hunger and for MDGs.

The entire programme will be telecast by TV channels including BTV Bangladesh to cover the country people as well as globally. An estimated 80 million people will take part across the country from 16-18 October, 2009 including this historic mobilization on 17 October.

This marquee event in the history of Bangladesh will be followed by a 15 minutes-long grand cultural event highlighting the different historic movement for freedom, language including war of liberation and the fight against poverty and hunger by the people of Bangladesh.
