Chinese aid to boost Nepal's infrastructure
China offered $119 mn in aid to its southern neighbour Nepal to bosst infrastructure and security during a brief and surprise visit by Chinese Premier.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made a surprise visit to Nepal on Saturday (Jan. 14), armed with an aid package offer worth $119 million.
Wen, who was on his way to attend the fifth World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, said the multimillion-dollar offer will be for the country’s economic development. He promised additional assistance for the Himalayan nation’s infrastructure projects, such as the development of an international airport in Pokhara — a popular tourist destination in Nepal — and the building of mountain highways and a hydropower plant.
During his brief visit, Wen also signed several agreements with Nepal, including providing technical assistance to the country and help in strengthening the Nepalese police force.
The assistance from China will help rebuild Nepal, which is still recovering from years of insurgency and a decade long civil war.
